Summary

Heartless transports you to a magical world and it shows you that before there was the Queen of Hearts, there was once just a girl who only wanted to fall in love。 Overall, I truly enjoyed the book, I highly recommend it and I hope that this will have a movie adaptation someday!

Really enjoyed this, I like how it was a new take on Alice in Wonderland。 I like how the Queen could basically have a back story。

this book broke me。。 i knew it was coming & yet it still hurt so so much。 however it was an amazing story。 within the first few chapters it had me smiling like an idiot and i didn’t want to put it down。 i loved all the references to the original story and i fell in love with the characters, especially jest he has my heart。 i highly recommend this book!

it took all the power in me to not dnf this book。 that blurb that describes the book? that’s pretty much ALL that happens, no plot and it’s just catherine complaining while being courted by the king。 i read the “sad ending” with a straight face and just ready for the book to be over, there wasn’t even any development or chemistry in cath and jests relationship。 all i can really say is if you haven’t read this book, don’t。 such a waste of my time but i’m the type of person who rarely dnfs books, it took all the power in me to not dnf this book。 that blurb that describes the book? that’s pretty much ALL that happens, no plot and it’s just catherine complaining while being courted by the king。 i read the “sad ending” with a straight face and just ready for the book to be over, there wasn’t even any development or chemistry in cath and jests relationship。 all i can really say is if you haven’t read this book, don’t。 such a waste of my time but i’m the type of person who rarely dnfs books, otherwise i would’ve stopped after the first few chapters。 。。。more

3/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐️-Heartless is at first a whimsical story of a secret romance between Lady Catherine and the new Joker, Jest, but it ends up falling flat in the final 30% or so。One of the big points that sucked me into the story was the writing style。 I loved the descriptions of the scenes, characters, and baked treats! Adding onto that is the naturally whimsical and orderly chaos of Wonderland。 Unfortunately, the court somewhat bogged down this whimsical nature, but I was able to forgive it… espec 3/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐️-Heartless is at first a whimsical story of a secret romance between Lady Catherine and the new Joker, Jest, but it ends up falling flat in the final 30% or so。One of the big points that sucked me into the story was the writing style。 I loved the descriptions of the scenes, characters, and baked treats! Adding onto that is the naturally whimsical and orderly chaos of Wonderland。 Unfortunately, the court somewhat bogged down this whimsical nature, but I was able to forgive it… especially when Jest came on the page。 His personality was as captivating to me as it was to Cath, and I positively adored him。 His secret rendezvous with Cath were very sweet and thoughtful。 His caring and teasing attitude only made me annoyed at Cath for her fickle nature that flip-flopped between independence/wit and meekness/resignation。 While at first her drive with the bakery was admirable—a classic YA protagonist move, especially with her avoidance of the King and power—she started to get annoying about halfway through。 Her actions were more often than not cowardly, what with the way she strung Jest along while reluctantly agreeing to the King’s courtship。 Coupling this with the climax scene (which I won’t go in depth or spoil, but I will say: some critical points felt very brief, and some aspects of the climax ended up getting explained in the resolution, so some of the impact didn’t work as well as the author expected), as well as the final straw that turns her into the Queen of Hearts? I didn’t like her by the end, and not in a satisfying way。To put it simply: Heartless feels like it was written before 2016, with classic tired trope of the girl revolving her life around a boy and rebelling against the system。 It’s not a mind blowing piece of literature, but it was entertaining while it lasted and if it had kept a good energy and pace throughout the ending, then it probably would be 3。5 or 4 stars。 Instead, I reason it settles at 3 stars。 。。。more

Such an entertaining “Alice in Wonderland” origin story! This was my first book by this author and won’t be my last。 It totally exceeded my expectations - the writing and character development were excellent! Those baking descriptions just had me drooling, haha。 I liked how Meyer didn’t try to re-build the world of Wonderland; she just dove right in with the same kind of whimsy! Cath’s evolution was perfectly developed with her emotional backstory and I really liked her witty personality。 I love Such an entertaining “Alice in Wonderland” origin story! Reading the last line was quite satisfying and I closed the book very sad it was over。 Highly recommend for fantasy and “Wonderland” fans! 。。。more

My favourite book of all time。 Nothing beats this。 Cath and Jest are soulmates。 My heart breaks on repeat for them。 I’ve read this book 9 times and sobbed, like balled my eyes out, each and every time。

I was a bit naive going into this。 Silly me, but I figured since this book came so highly recommended by like EVERYONE, that it would actually have a happy ending。Please note, if you're looking for a happy ending, look elsewhere。This is a prequel to Alice and Wonderland, about how the Queen of Hearts became a villain。 (view spoiler)[Fool that I am, I thought there would be some miraculous twist that allowed Catherine her happy ending that would still somehow fit in with who the Queen of Hearts i I was a bit naive going into this。 Silly me, but I figured since this book came so highly recommended by like EVERYONE, that it would actually have a happy ending。Please note, if you're looking for a happy ending, look elsewhere。This is a prequel to Alice and Wonderland, about how the Queen of Hearts became a villain。 (view spoiler)[Fool that I am, I thought there would be some miraculous twist that allowed Catherine her happy ending that would still somehow fit in with who the Queen of Hearts is。 Like。。。 her bloodthirsty "off with his head" mentality was nothing more than a facade。 Or that when she slept, she was able to travel to some dream state and still be with her lover。 Or that the Queen of Hearts was someone ELSE and not Catherine, that she gave the identity to someone else so she could ride off into the sunset and live her happily ever after。Sadly, none of these happened。 I have now made it my mission to write a prequel villain story that ends happily。 (hide spoiler)]If you go into this story knowing it has a tragic ending, I think you'll enjoy it。 The world was full of whimsy, which I loved。 And Catherine's descent into madness and hysteria and cold villainy felt believable and was also tragic。 I didn't fully understand what her dreams meant。 That was never explained。 And I hated that she had no backbone, that she was unable to make her dreams happen until it was too late。 Then again, it takes a very flawed person to become such a villain, so perhaps that was meant to be。 If she was strong enough to make her own decisions and take responsibility for her actions, she wouldn't become such a miserable queen。Meyer is a great story-teller。 I was riveted from start to finish。 This was the first book I've ever read by her, but it won't be the last。 Hopefully, her other books will have happier endings and satisfy my poor, delicate heart。 。。。more

When I first read the blurb I was instantly intrigued, now I've read it I feel disappointed。 Wasn't anywhere near how interesting I thought it would be but still kept me wanting more。 I feel like 3/4 of the book is build up and then everything happens in the last 3 chapters。 See overall I great read just was expecting better。 When I first read the blurb I was instantly intrigued, now I've read it I feel disappointed。 Wasn't anywhere near how interesting I thought it would be but still kept me wanting more。 I feel like 3/4 of the book is build up and then everything happens in the last 3 chapters。 See overall I great read just was expecting better。 。。。more

It was difficult to rate this one because I really liked some part and others I didn't like at all。 I enjoyed the romance but in the beginning of the book I didn't care for the main characters struggles。 It seems like it wasn't a big deal and she could have saved herself a lot of trouble if she had been honest from start。 It was difficult to rate this one because I really liked some part and others I didn't like at all。 I enjoyed the romance but in the beginning of the book I didn't care for the main characters struggles。 It seems like it wasn't a big deal and she could have saved herself a lot of trouble if she had been honest from start。 。。。more

I LOVED this book! I had high expectations, and Marissa Meyer did not disappoint。 Definitely a new favorite。 Cath is such a complex character with a superbly written arc, albeit a tragic one。 Her backstory aligns so well with the original tale of Alice in Wonderland, down to the Queen of Heart's hate for white roses and the tiny, meek King。 Cath's actions make sense even though she's the villain of the story。 You empathize with her。 Meyer truly puts a face to the infamous villain。 I'd love to se I LOVED this book! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I wanted to rate this 5/5 but aside from the sad ending, I found the story quite boring in having only one set。 Okay so first, I hesitated in reading this because I do not like the movie which was the inspiration for this book。 Since I was a kid, I already don’t like movies where the characters are like in a lost adventure or journey。 Like Alice in Wonderland, Bolt, etc。 However, I somehow desired for this book to have not just one setting and for the characters to have an adventure somewhere, I wanted to rate this 5/5 but aside from the sad ending, I found the story quite boring in having only one set。 Okay so first, I hesitated in reading this because I do not like the movie which was the inspiration for this book。 Since I was a kid, I already don’t like movies where the characters are like in a lost adventure or journey。 Like Alice in Wonderland, Bolt, etc。 However, I somehow desired for this book to have not just one setting and for the characters to have an adventure somewhere, like the Chess (since they were not successful in going there), and not just on that specific land。 Second, the ending was sad and kind of disappointing。 It was as if Catherine will be that villain who was heartless (literally) in the future。 This made me hope for a second book to see what Catherine had become after she had her revenge。 Will she continue to be cold and heartless? Will she become unkind as well to other people? Or will there be a time that she will realize how different she had become, but since she already knew that, will she try to change back to her old self? There are a lot of what if’s! Also, I know it was part of Catherine’s character to be selfish after Jest’s death, but isn’t she going to at least acknowledge her wrongs? Because although she helped Mary Anne from Peter Peter, it was still her choice to go into that door even though she knew what will happen next。 And the fact that she even dared to challenge Hatta if the prophecies were true if she chooses to get through the door。 And third, speaking of the setting of the book, I am much disappointed that Catherine wasn’t able to go through the Chess。 Okay fine, I sometimes wonder what would happen if a character would defy the “rules”, which Catherine did and the prophecies did happen。 But what if they did go through the glass? I wanted to know what was the Chess looked like。 What are the creatures that they will encounter there? Will the white queen win the war? I understand that this book was inspired by a specific version (lol am I right?) but I wanted to know what should have happened?!? But anyway, since this book focuses only on one setting and specific characters, I kind of understood that this is a standalone novel。 Because if they might continue to the Chess, they will encounter new characters and new problems, which means that this book might likely have a sequel。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 One of the most addicting and heart wrenching books I've ever read。 From the beginning, as I began to realize our main character was intended to be the young queen of hearts we all know, I knew this book would end in tragedy, but I tried to tell myself I could be wrong and it could have a happy ending。 I believe it was that battle within me that made it so addictive。 We're so used to happy endings in stories, even ones that seem to be impossible, but I knew this story, I knew something horrible One of the most addicting and heart wrenching books I've ever read。 From the beginning, as I began to realize our main character was intended to be the young queen of hearts we all know, I knew this book would end in tragedy, but I tried to tell myself I could be wrong and it could have a happy ending。 I believe it was that battle within me that made it so addictive。 We're so used to happy endings in stories, even ones that seem to be impossible, but I knew this story, I knew something horrible enough had to happen in order to turn her into the character we know she's supposed to become。 My heart was torn between needing the happy ending and knowing it couldn't be, hope kept me hooked。 The characters were very well written and easy to fall in love with, or to hate (depending on their role)。 I felt I knew the people as Catherine did。 I loved the whimsical world we're introduced to, and that it was explained just enough for us to recognize the strange world we know as Wonderland, and understand the story, but also kept aloof and weird enough that we really come to understand how mad it is。 I love the subtle and not so subtle hints towards the story we know, I've never read the original book but I've seen the movie and I loved making the connections。 I also loved the unexpected twist of Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater and his wife。 You don't suspect much from them when you meet them, but it's hinted at that there's something up with them as we get further into the story, though their roles are small enough that you tend to forget about them, allowing their little secret to give you the gasp of realization when you finally figure it out。I knew it would require something truely tragic to turn Cath from the kind girl we're introduced to into the angry queen we all know, and the author did not disappoint, except that I was very disappointed when my favorite character died 😭。 I will admit I was very attached to Jest, and while I knew he would probably be the source of the tragedy I didn't want to believe it when we was killed。 Like Cath I too tried to think of all the impossible ways he could be brought back。 I'm still mourning him, but that just shows the authors skill。 But Catherine's turn, from the young baker to the evil queen, was dare I say breathtaking, almost like a beautiful caterpillar going into a cocoon, you hope it comes out a beautiful butterfly, and it does, but it's not a bright colorful one, it's a dark one, a glorious majestic dark one。 And her turn is almost relatable。 Seeing it all through her eyes, her mother's insistent push toward her marriage to the king, the king and his bumblings, Jest *sigh*, her bakery, and her best friend。 Gradually and then all of the sudden everything she loved and wanted being ripped from her, you felt it as she does。 Her madness in the end did not feel unwarranted, I along with her felt life was unjust, and I too would have given away my heart if I were in her shoes。 。。。more

mads reading!

Not bad! An interesting version of the queen of heart’s descent into madness, the writing was just alright but the author excels at descriptions and imagery。 Jest was the only character who was really interesting to me and had lots of personality, but everyone else wasn’t bad by any means, just average。 My favourite part of the book were the last few chapters as things start to pick up and Catherine’s change in character is chillingly awesome。 Go girlboss!
